Explanation

In the doubled 'thagumo thagumo', 'is it fitting, is it fitting', we hear the poet's anguish. The hidden argument is simple. Your vel pierced a whole mountain; is it any great thing for it to cut through my small bonds of attachment?

Listen to the sound pattern: 'thalaipattu', bound in fetters; 'kilaipattu', together with his kin; 'tholaipattu', pierced through. Sooran rose up surrounded by his kin, and I too am surrounded and bound by mine. Let the vel that pierced his chest pierce my fetters as well.

This is not a rejection of family life. Tamil devotional tradition honours the householder, and many saints lived as householders. The danger the poet names is the moment when love becomes a prison that hides God from view. The vel, which is wisdom, does not destroy the family; it destroys the bondage.

Kanda Puranam, the slaying of Tarakan

The Vel That Split the Mountain of Illusion

From the Kanda Puranam. Tarakan, the elephant-faced younger brother of Sooran, lived under the protection of Krauncha, a mountain full of illusion that led all who entered it astray. Murugan's commander Veerabahu and his warriors went into its caves, lost their way in its tricks and lay trapped and senseless inside.

When Murugan heard of it, he hurled his vel. The shining vel split the mountain open and passed on through the chest of Tarakan, who was hiding behind it. As the illusion broke, the trapped warriors woke and walked out free.

Devotees read this story as a picture of the inner life. Attachment rises around us like a mountain of illusion, and we wander lost in its caves. When the vel of wisdom comes, the mountain splits, and the parts of us that were trapped walk out into the light. That is the vel the poet calls on in this verse.
