Explanation

In the opening prayer the poet called his heart 'kanakal', a heavy stone. Here he calls his mind 'silai', a rock. In nature a lotus never buds on a rock. But the next two lines tell us who is able to make it happen.

Murugan, the commander of the gods, wanted to marry Valli, a girl of the hill hunters. To win her he bowed at her feet and said, 'Pania', 'Command me, I am yours to order.' He is the Lord who set aside his greatness before love. His love, 'thaniyaa athimoham', is a great longing that never cools.

For such a Lord, making the lotus of his feet bloom even on a stony mind is no great matter. This is one of the lovely paradoxes of Tamil bhakti: God bows at the feet of the devotee. The poet's hope rests not on his own softness but on that humility of love.

Kanda Puranam, the marriage of Valli

The Lord Who Bowed at Valli's Feet

From the Kanda Puranam. Valli was the foster daughter of Nambirajan, chief of the hill hunters. As she guarded the millet field, Murugan came to her as a hunter; folk tradition adds that he came again as a seller of bangles; then he came as an old ascetic. Each time she turned him away.

The Lord praised by all the devas, the hero who had conquered Sooran, came again and again for the love of a simple hill girl, and he bowed at her feet and pleaded with her. At last he showed his true form, and Valli remembered that in a former birth she had done penance to marry him alone.

Devotees find a message in this story. We speak of seeking God, but far more often it is God who comes seeking us, patient and humble, again and again, until our stony hearts open. That is the 'compassionate Lord of unquenchable love' the poet calls upon here.
