Explanation

This verse is a small course in spiritual practice. It begins with a warning, 'keduvaay', 'you will be ruined', and then gives directions: 'kadhi kel', 'listen to the way out'.

The first step on that way is giving: 'karavaadhu iduvaay', give without hiding anything, without keeping accounts. Generosity loosens the grip of attachment. The second step is remembrance: hold the feet of the Lord of the vel in your mind. The third is to let the fire of that remembrance burn long-standing sorrow to dust. The fourth, heard in the doubled 'viduvaay viduvaay', is complete release, letting go of all karma.

The poet is not lecturing anyone else; he is speaking to his own mind. That is why the advice reaches us so directly. Each of us has a mind that needs to be told, gently and firmly, the same five things: listen, give, remember, burn, let go.

Adi Shankara tradition, the Subrahmanya Bhujangam

Shankara Is Healed at Thiruchendur

From the tradition of Adi Shankara. Shankara travelled the length of the land teaching dharma. Tradition says that once he was struck by a cruel illness that no medicine could cure. He went south to Thiruchendur on the seashore and worshipped Murugan, the Lord of Senthil.

It is told that in the temple he saw a serpent circling the feet of the Lord in worship, and that he then composed a hymn to Murugan in the 'bhujanga' metre, whose rhythm moves like the gliding of a snake. That hymn is the Subrahmanya Bhujangam. When he finished singing it, his illness left him.

To this day people who suffer from long illness recite the Subrahmanya Bhujangam with faith. The story is a living example of this verse's advice: remember the feet of the Lord of the vel, and let that remembrance burn your long suffering to dust.

Could you give something to someone today without counting the cost and without anyone knowing?
