Life of Arunagirinathar, the Kambaththu Ilaiyanar tradition of ThiruvannamalaiMurugan Appears From the Pillar
From the tradition of Thiruvannamalai. As Arunagirinathar's fame spread, a courtier named Sambandandan, a worshipper of the Goddess, grew jealous of him. Before King Prabhudeva Raya he made a challenge: 'Can you make your Murugan appear for all to see? If you cannot, you must leave this kingdom.'
The king and the people gathered in the temple. Sambandandan's own attempts came to nothing. Arunagirinathar sang to Murugan with tears in his eyes. Then, tradition says, Murugan blazed forth from one of the temple's pillars, seated on his peacock, and everyone present saw him and bowed down.
At that pillar Murugan is still worshipped today as Kambaththu Ilaiyanar, 'the young Lord of the pillar'. It is the story of the boon-giving rider of the peacock agreeing, as this verse asks, to show himself to the devotee who called him.
