Yoga Vasishtha, the story of King LavanaA Whole Life in a Moment
From the Yoga Vasishtha, a story the sage Vasishtha told to Rama. King Lavana sat in his court when a magician entered and waved a bunch of peacock feathers before him. In that moment the king fell into a trance.
In the trance he rode a horse into a wild forest and lost his way. Starving, he married a woman of a poor forest tribe in return for food. He lived there for sixty years, raised children, lost them in a terrible famine, and in his grief was about to throw himself into a fire. At that instant he woke. He was sitting on his throne, and only a few moments had passed.
The story goes on: the next day the king travelled south and found the very forest and the very people he had seen in his trance. Vasishtha told this tale to show how dreamlike is the life we take to be solid and real, the same 'life of cruel karma taken for real' that Arunagirinathar grieves over in this verse.
