Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam and the Manikkavasagar traditionThe Guru Under the Kurundha Tree
From the Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam. Thiruvadavurar, chief minister of the Pandya king, set out with the royal treasure to buy horses. At Thiruperunthurai he came upon a guru sitting beneath a kurundha tree, surrounded by disciples. At the very sight of him the minister's heart melted, and he knew that this guru was Lord Shiva himself.
The guru gave him the teaching. From that moment the minister became Manikkavasagar, and he spent the money for the horses on building a temple. In the Thiruvasagam he later sang, he tries again and again to tell what happened that day, and again and again he dissolves into confessing that it cannot be told.
Manikkavasagar is a witness to the truth of this verse: what the guru makes one realise on 'that day' is known only by those who know it in that way, and the best a poet can do is sing around its edges.
