Meaning

I have no support of my own to gain your grace, and you have not thought of me even a little! O you who delight in the Vedas, the Agamas and wisdom, O you who are beyond the mind, crest-jewel of the world of the gods!

Explanation

There is a loving boldness in this verse: 'You have not thought of me even a little!' It is the complaint of a child to its mother. But first the poet states his own position: 'aadhaaram ilaen', I have no support. Penance, learning, good deeds: I have nothing to lean on that could earn your grace.

The third line holds a fine contrast. Murugan delights in the Vedas, the Agamas and wisdom, the whole world of sacred learning, and yet he is 'manodheedhan', beyond the mind. You can read about him in books, but the mind cannot grasp him.

Put the two halves together and the logic of surrender appears. If the Lord is beyond the mind, no amount of mental effort can reach him; and if I have no support of my own, I am not tempted to rely on effort anyway. The one with nothing to hold is free to be held. That is why the saints say that the moment of complete helplessness is often the moment grace arrives.

Bhagavata Purana, Book 8

Gajendra in the Crocodile's Grip

From the Bhagavata Purana. Gajendra, king of the elephants, was bathing with his herd in a lake on Mount Trikuta. Suddenly a crocodile seized his leg. Gajendra fought with all his great strength, and the other elephants pulled to help him. The Purana says the struggle went on for years, and slowly his strength ran out.

At last Gajendra understood that neither his own might nor his kin could save him. He raised a lotus in his trunk and called with his whole heart: 'O First Cause of all!' At that very moment Lord Vishnu came racing on Garuda, struck down the crocodile with his discus and set the elephant free.

The moment Gajendra knew 'I have no support', the true support arrived. That is the moment this verse speaks from: 'aadhaaram ilaen', I have nothing to lean on, and so I turn wholly to you.

To reflect on

Which supports do you lean on in life? If they all gave way, what would you hold on to?
