Explanation

The verse opens with a complaint. 'Was it not you who put me into the illusion of household life? And you have not even borne with my ignorance!' It is the voice of a devotee who feels close enough to argue with God.

The last line turns everything gently around. Picture the twelve mighty shoulders of Murugan, wrestling in battle; and over them, a garland. That garland is nothing but 'en sol', my words, my songs. The very poet who calls himself 'pollaen', a wretch, sees his verses worn on the Lord's chest.

The complaint answers itself. You say he has not borne with your ignorance? He wears your words. What greater patience and acceptance could there be? Thousands of Thiruppugazh songs were Arunagirinathar's garland, and the poet knows that the Lord received them. The household 'maya' may still hold him, but he is already accepted.

Kanda Puranam, the defeat of Soorapadman

The Cosmic Form That Sooran Saw

From the Kanda Puranam. In the final battle Soorapadman unleashed every illusion he possessed. Then Murugan revealed his cosmic form, with six faces and twelve arms, holding all the worlds within himself. In it Sooran saw the universes, the gods, the asuras, and even himself.

For a moment his heart melted, and he understood: 'This is the Supreme.' But the next moment pride and illusion seized him again. 'Shall I bow to a boy?' he thought, and rose once more to fight. Murugan cut through that illusion too with his vel, and afterwards accepted Sooran himself as his peacock and his rooster.

It is a story of immense mercy: even one held fast in maya was finally kept at the Lord's side. The twelve arms that Sooran saw in that cosmic vision are the same twelve shoulders that, in this verse, wear the garland of a devotee's words.

To reflect on

Have you ever complained to God or to someone close, only to realise they had already accepted you completely?
