Explanation

'Kaalai' means a young man in his prime, strong and full of life. Arunagirinathar always sings of Murugan as the ever-young Lord. The chance to bow at the feet of that radiant youth he calls 'thavam', penance, or rather its fruit: such a chance comes only as the reward of tapas over many lives.

In the third line the scene of verse 6 returns: Murugan bowing at Valli's feet. The devotee bows at God's feet; God bows at the devotee's feet. In love there is no keeping score of who is greater. Valli's hair is compared to 'paalai', the cream-coloured spathe of the palm that unfolds into long strands, a simple image from the hill country where she grew up.

The verse ends with a single word: 'saranam', refuge. All the arguments, laments and requests of the book are gathered into it. When there is nothing more to say, there is this.

Avvaiyar tradition

Roasted Fruit or Unroasted?

From the Avvaiyar tradition. On a hot day the aged poet Avvaiyar, tired from walking, rested in the shade of a naval tree. A cowherd boy was sitting up in its branches. 'Grandmother, would you like some fruit?' he called. 'Do you want roasted fruit or unroasted fruit?'

Puzzled at the idea of roasted fruit, Avvaiyar said, 'Give me the roasted ones.' The boy shook the branch and the fruits fell onto the hot sand. Avvaiyar picked each one up and blew on it to clear away the sand. The boy laughed: 'Is the fruit too hot, grandmother? You are blowing on it!'

The great poet saw that a small boy had outwitted her with a play on words, and as she marvelled, he revealed himself as Murugan. This playful, youthful Lord, who teaches with a smile, is the 'kaalai Kumaresan' whom Arunagirinathar bows to in this verse.

To reflect on

When did you last stop arguing and simply surrender with the word 'refuge'?
