Explanation

'Muraiyo', 'is this just?', is the cry with which a wronged subject called on a king for justice. Just as Kannagi stood in the Pandya king's court in the Silappathikaram and demanded justice, the poet stands before Murugan as before a king, which is why he calls him 'magipaa', O king.

His plea is this: my fault is ignorance, not deliberate hostility. I did not aim at your feet because I did not know better. Is it just to let one who falls through ignorance be ruined completely?

The answer is hidden in the last line. This is the Lord who went searching for Valli, a girl of the forest tribe whom the world might have thought beneath the notice of a god, and wedded her. He is 'kunabhoodharan', a mountain of good qualities, and such a Lord does not abandon anyone for being lowly or unknowing. The appeal for justice turns, quietly, into an appeal to mercy.

Kanda Puranam, the previous birth of Valli

Amudhavalli and Sundaravalli

From the Kanda Puranam. Two maidens, Amudhavalli and Sundaravalli, were born from the eyes of Lord Vishnu. Both longed to marry Murugan and performed severe penance. Murugan appeared before them and blessed them: 'You will both be mine.'

Amudhavalli was raised as the daughter of Indra and became Devayanai. Sundaravalli was born on earth from a deer and lay among the valli creepers in the forest, where Nambirajan, chief of the hill hunters, found her, named her Valli and raised her as his own.

One was raised in heaven, one on earth; one in a palace, one in the forest. Murugan accepted both. In temples he stands with Valli on one side and Devayanai on the other. The story shows a Lord whose love does not weigh high and low, which is why the poet, pleading his ignorance, can still hope for mercy from the one who wedded 'the lightning-creeper of the hill tribe'.

To reflect on

How do you treat someone who wronged you out of ignorance: with strict justice or with mercy?
