Explanation

Worldly life is an ocean, and the first two lines paint a man drowning in it. His clothes come loose, his mind panics, he cries out, and wave after wave rolls over his head. Thiruvalluvar's image of 'the great ocean of births' comes alive here in vivid, frightening detail.

The next two lines give two reasons for hope. First, this is the Lord who went looking for Valli among the hunters, people whose life was the hunt and the kill, and embraced her. Valli is called 'pidi', a young she-elephant, a tender image from the forest she grew up in. He turns no one away for being lowly. Second, this is the Lord who split the mountain apart. No obstacle is too great for him.

Put together, the question 'will you leave me to drown?' answers itself. The one who sought out Valli and broke through mountains will not abandon a devotee crying out in the waves. The verse is a cry and an act of trust at the same time.

Bhagavata Purana, the Matsya avatara

The Fish Who Saved Manu From the Flood

From the Bhagavata Purana. King Satyavrata of the Dravida land, later known as Manu, was offering water in the river Kritamala when a tiny fish swam into his cupped hands and begged, 'Save me.' He put it in his water-pot, and it grew. He moved it to a jar, a pond, a lake and finally the sea, and each time it filled the space. The king understood that this was Lord Vishnu.

The fish told him: 'In seven days a great flood will drown the worlds. A boat will come to you. Board it with the sages and the seeds of all life.' The flood came, and the waves covered even the mountains. The great fish appeared with a single horn, and the boat was tied to it and towed safely through the deluge.

It is the story of a Lord who does not let go even when the waves roll over our heads, the very fear this verse cries out.
