Meaning

The slaying spear that blazed so that Indra's distress was wholly removed; so that Brahma, master of the four Vedas that even dark Vishnu knows, and the Lord who knows no wavering, no decay and no delusion, found peace of mind and joy; so that the waters of the wave-tossed ocean where the makara fish live, and the very order of the worlds were shaken, and fire roamed through every world of the howling night-prowling demons. O spear in the hand of the younger brother of the elephant-faced god: the lord of the hills, of the arts and of play; husband of Valli of arrow-like eyes; broad-chested lover of Valli, in the lovely form of a bridegroom pouring grace like a cloud; who filled ocean and sky with fire.

Explanation

The closing verse of the Vel Viruttam is a play of sound: the syllable 'la' rings out in almost every word. Its core meaning is that the spear brought peace to Indra, Brahma and the Lord himself, and was fire to the world of the demons. The book ends by calling Murugan the younger brother of the elephant-faced god, just as the first verse began with the brother in whom Ganesha delights.

Sangam literary tradition

The Velan's Dance

From Sangam literature. In the old Tamil hill country, when a young woman pined and wasted, a velan, a priest of Murugan, would be called. Holding a spear, wearing kadamba and kanthal flowers, he danced and sang to invoke Murugan; this worship was called veriyattu. Poems in the Kurunthokai and Akananuru describe it. More than two thousand years ago, Tamils already worshipped Murugan in the form of the vel.

Has the mere sound of a word or chant ever drawn you toward the divine?
