Meaning

In olden days there were only two lights, the sun and the moon. Now they have become three. Free of every stain, they sweep away the great darkness that comes into the world as twofold sorrow. The third light is the verses of the Thiruvaimozhi of the King of Kurugai, the Lord of wide and great fame, whose two flower-feet crush our births.

Explanation

The sun clears the darkness of day, the moon the darkness of night. But what light clears the darkness of the heart? Kambar says: the Thiruvaimozhi is the third light. It shines not outside but within.

'The great darkness that comes as twofold sorrow': deeds are of two kinds, good and bad, and both bind us to birth; a golden chain and an iron chain are both chains. The Thiruvaimozhi sweeps away both kinds of darkness, because it comes together with the Alvar's feet, which crush our births.

Thirukkovalur tradition (Life of the first three Alvars)

Three Lamps Lit on a Rainy Night

From the tradition of Thirukkovalur. On a night of heavy rain, Poigai Alvar took shelter in the small front passage of a house at Thirukkovalur. There was room for one to lie down. Soon Bhoothathu Alvar came; there was room for two to sit, so they sat. Then Pey Alvar came; there was room for three to stand, so the three stood.

In the dark they suddenly felt a fourth pressing in among them. To see who it was, Poigai Alvar sang: 'With the earth as the lamp, the wide sea as the oil, the hot sun as the flame...' Bhoothathu Alvar sang: 'With love as the lamp, longing as the oil, the melting mind as the wick...'

In the light of those two, Pey Alvar sang: 'I have seen Thiru; I have seen the golden form': he saw Vishnu standing among them. Once two lamps were lit, the Lord was seen in a third light. Kambar's 'of old there were two lights; now there are three' is like this: what the sun and moon cannot show, the third light, the Thiruvaimozhi, reveals.
