Meaning

Long ago Madhurakavi Perumal went to Maran, Nammalvar, and with just one padhigam in southern Tamil he reached the Alvar's golden feet and stood there. Thinking of that, the generous one of Thiruvazhundur, praised by the assemblies, sang padhigam after padhigam.

Explanation

This is Kambar's humble preface, touched with gentle humour. Madhurakavi Alvar was Nammalvar's disciple, and all he sang of his teacher was a single padhigam of eleven verses, the Kanninun Siruthambu. With that one padhigam he reached his teacher's feet, and he is honoured as one of the Alvars.

Kambar's point: 'One padhigam was enough for Madhurakavi; I need ten!' There is humility in it, lowering himself, and there is praise of Madhurakavi's greatness. At the same time it tells us the shape of the book: a hundred verses in tens.

Guruparampara tradition (Life of Madhurakavi Alvar)

'I Know No Other God': The Disciple Who Saw God in His Teacher

From Vaishnava tradition. Madhurakavi Alvar was a brahmin of Thirukkolur and a learned poet. Once he found Nammalvar, his whole life belonged to his teacher. He wrote down on palm leaves all that Nammalvar sang, and kept it safe.

He himself sang only one padhigam, the Kanninun Siruthambu. In it he did not sing of Vishnu; he sang of his teacher Nammalvar: 'I know no other god; I will wander singing the sweet music of the songs of Kurugur Nambi.' Sweeter to him than Krishna bound with Yashoda's rope, he says, is the name of his teacher.

After Nammalvar left this world, Madhurakavi installed his image and worshipped it. In this preface, where Kambar measures his own humility against Madhurakavi, who became an Alvar with one padhigam, he bows to that devotion to the teacher.
