Explanation

This verse is a lovely ladder. At the top is Thirumal, greatest of gods. The poet worthy of him is Nammalvar. The poet worthy of Nammalvar is Kambar. Each is 'worthy' of the one above.

The word 'thakka', worthy, is the heart of the verse. To sing of the great, one must be fit to do so. Nammalvar was fit to sing of Thirumal, and Kambar was fit to sing of Nammalvar, says the preface. For us who read the book it is also an invitation: let us read it worthily, with love.

Guruparampara tradition

Why He Is Called 'Our' Alvar

From Vaishnava tradition. Tradition gives a lovely reason why Maran of Kurugur is called Nammalvar, 'our Alvar': the Lord of Srirangam himself called him 'nam Alvar' with affection. And devotees call that same Ranganatha 'Namperumal', 'our Lord'.

The Lord calls the devotee 'ours'; the devotees call the Lord 'ours'. In this little word 'nam', spoken with the right of belonging on both sides, lies the essence of Vaishnava devotion. In the third prefatory verse too, Ranganatha asks, 'Have you sung of our Sadagopan?'

That is why this preface calls Kambar the poet 'worthy' of Nammalvar. To sing of one who belongs to God, one needs a poet dear to God.

To reflect on

Whom can you call 'ours' with a sense of belonging? Who calls you that?
