Ekadashi tradition and the Srimad BhagavatamAmbarisha Breaks His Fast
From the Srimad Bhagavatam. King Ambarisha was a great devotee of Vishnu. Once, after fasting on Ekadashi, he was about to break his fast on Dvadashi when the sage Durvasa arrived. The king invited him to eat, and the sage went to bathe, but he was long in returning.
The fast had to be broken before Dvadashi ended, yet one may not eat before a guest. On the advice of the priests, Ambarisha sipped a little water and so completed his vow. When Durvasa returned he was furious and loosed a demon on the king. Ambarisha stood still with folded hands. Vishnu's discus rose, destroyed the demon and chased Durvasa.
Durvasa fled through the three worlds and at last went to Vishnu. 'I am bound to my devotees,' said the Lord. 'Go to Ambarisha.' Durvasa returned and bowed. All that time Ambarisha had waited without eating. A paaranam is a feast that comes to those who wait with patience, and so is the Tamil feast Nammalvar gave.
