Guruparampara tradition (Life of Madhurakavi Alvar)Madhurakavi Follows a Light in the South
From Vaishnava tradition. Madhurakavi Alvar was on pilgrimage to the holy places of the north. One night at Ayodhya he saw a great light in the southern sky and longed to know where it came from. The next nights too the light appeared.
He followed it south on foot, for days, weeks and months, the light guiding him every night. At last he reached Thirukkurugur on the bank of the Thamirabarani, and there the light came to rest at the foot of a tamarind tree.
In the hollow of that tamarind tree he found a young man who had sat motionless in meditation for sixteen years, eyes closed, speaking to no one. It was Nammalvar. That light later 'came forth' as a thousand songs. Kambar's 'the holy Thousand of nectar came forth from the flower of Kurugur' is the story of that light becoming song.
