Explanation

The same book looks different to different people. To those of wrong doctrines it is a shackle; to debaters it is a sword; to devotees it is an ocean of bliss. This is the many-sided nature of the Thiruvaimozhi.

In the end it is a 'kalpaka', a wish-granting tree: whatever a person comes seeking, it gives. Wisdom to those who seek wisdom, love to those who seek love.

Guruparampara tradition (Life of Thirumangai Alvar)

The Mantra Received in a Highway Robbery

From Vaishnava tradition. Neelan was a commander of the Chola king and chief of the region of Thirumangai. He wished to marry a woman named Kumudavalli, who set one condition: 'For a year, feed a thousand devotees every day.'

When his wealth ran out, Neelan turned to highway robbery. One day Vishnu and Lakshmi came along that road as a newly married couple, wearing all their jewels. Neelan took every ornament. Only the toe-ring on the bridegroom's foot would not come off, so he bit at it with his teeth. Then he found he could not even lift the bundle of stolen goods.

'What spell have you cast?' he asked. The Lord, who had come as the bridegroom, spoke into his ear the sacred mantra 'Om Namo Narayanaya'. In that instant Neelan was utterly changed. He became Thirumangai Alvar and sang the Periya Thirumozhi and other hymns. God's grace is a 'kalpaka' that gave even a robber something far greater than he sought; the Thiruvaimozhi brought that same grace into Tamil.

To reflect on

Has someone ever given you something far greater than what you were looking for?
