Explanation

This verse is like a festival of bathing. The Thiruvaimozhi is a flood, and devotees bathe in it in every way. First they study and listen. Then joy rises and the heart is stirred. After that they plunge in, scoop it up to drink, and swim.

'He has the right to sell us or buy us' is the peak of devotion. We belong wholly to the Alvar; whatever he does with us, we consent.

Guruparampara tradition (Life of Kulasekhara Alvar)

The King Who Called Out His Army to Help Rama

From Vaishnava tradition. Kulasekhara was king of the Chera land. Every day he sat with devotees and listened to the Ramayana. As he listened he was wholly immersed in the story, and forgot it was a story at all.

One day the reciter told a passage from the Aranya Kanda: 'Fourteen thousand demons led by Khara and Dushana came to attack Rama. Rama stood alone.' Hearing this, Kulasekhara leapt up in distress. 'Rama alone? Army, set out at once!' he ordered, and marched off to war with his troops.

The ministers were stunned. The reciter quickly told the next part: 'Rama alone defeated all those demons, and Sita embraced him with joy.' Only then was the king calmed, and he turned back. Kambar calls this kind of total immersion in the flood of the story 'plunging, diving, swimming'.
