Shiva Purana and the Arunachala traditionThe Flame Without Beginning or End
From the Shiva Purana and the tradition of Thiruvannamalai. Once Brahma the creator and Vishnu the preserver fell into an argument: "Which of us is greater?" The argument grew into a great quarrel.
Then, between them, there rose a vast pillar of fire whose base and top could not be seen. They agreed that whoever first found its base or its top would be the greater. Vishnu took the form of a boar, Varaha, and dug down into the earth. Brahma took the form of a swan and flew upward.
Ages passed, and Vishnu could not find the base. He came back humbly and admitted the truth: "I could not find it." Brahma did not find the top either, but he caught a thazhampoo (screw pine flower) that was falling from above, made it his witness, and lied, "I have seen the top."
Then Lord Shiva came forth from the pillar of fire. He praised Vishnu, who had humbly told the truth. He said that Brahma, who had lied, would have no temple worship on earth, and that the thazhampoo, which had borne false witness, would never be used in his worship. At the prayer of the devas, the pillar of fire cooled and stood as a mountain. That is Thiruvannamalai. In memory of this, on Karthigai Deepam a great flame is lit on the summit of the hill. The meaning of the story is that God cannot be measured by pride; he is reached only through love.
