Explanation

This is among the most debated couplets in the Kural. It says that falsehood may take the place of truth if it brings a flawless good. At first it may seem to contradict Valluvar's general view, since other couplets condemn lying severely. But the word enin, "if so", and the condition purai theerndha, "free of fault", deserve notice.

Commentators explain it in two ways. Parimelazhagar and others accept it directly and say a lie spoken to save a life or prevent harm may be excused. Others take it as pointing to an alternative view, "some say so, yet even that must stay within dharma", and think Valluvar does not praise it fully. We should accept this difference honestly.

In practice it means: a lie may be spoken only wholly for another's welfare; it must contain no gain for oneself; and its result must be a flawless good. These three conditions are very rarely met together. So the verse does not give lying an opening; it indirectly shows that the life of truth is grace and goodness.

We must not use it casually. Lying for one's own convenience, saying "it was for good", is not dharma. Because the chance of misreading is great, the following couplets stress the evil of falsehood.

A story

Kaushika and the Robbers

In the Karna Parva of the Mahabharata, Krishna tells Arjuna a story. It shows that truth and dharma sometimes pose subtle problems. An ascetic named Kaushika lived outside a town. He had vowed, "I will always speak the truth", and so his fame spread everywhere.

One day some travellers fleeing robbers hid in the forest where Kaushika lived. Soon the robbers arrived and asked, "Which way did those people run?" Kaushika, keeping his vow, spoke the truth and showed the place where they were hiding. The robbers caught them and killed them.

In telling it, Krishna explains to Arjuna that dharma is subtle. One who clings only to the word "truth" and thereby causes lives to be lost, he says, does not understand dharma. The Mahabharata says Kaushika met with suffering because of his error. Many commentaries speak of hell for him, others say his merit diminished.

The story recalls the couplet "Even falsehood may take the place of truth if it brings a flawless good." The idea that concealment or altered speech used to save a life may fall within dharma comes from stories like this. Yet this is no licence to lie. It asks for the wisdom to weigh purpose, result and absence of self-interest. Krishna shows that truth is not the letter of a word but the inner spirit of dharma joined with grace.
