Explanation

This couplet shows the fruit of truthfulness as a place in the hearts of people. "Living without lying in the mind" means avoiding falsehood not only in words but in thought. Valluvar says that one honest in thought too will "abide", ulan, in the hearts of all the people of the world. Even when the body is gone, he lives in memory.

The word ullam, "heart", appears twice: his heart and the hearts of the world. It is a beautiful link. One who keeps his own heart pure finds a place in other hearts. A pure heart gives birth to trust, trust brings love, and love gives a place.

Commentators give various senses. Some say "he will be respected by all". Others say "as God dwells in every heart, this person will abide too". All these converge on one aim: the truthful person gains lasting regard.

The message applies not only to personal life but to office, family and society. If a person is free of lying, his word has weight everywhere. This reward goes not to one who speaks truth to seek fame but to one whose very nature is truth. Such a person remains in people's minds even after death.

A story

Rama's Word

Valmiki's Ramayana praises Rama as satyaparakrama, one whose strength is truth. In the Ayodhya Kanda, because of the boons Dasharatha had given Kaikeyi, Rama had to go to the forest for fourteen years. The king sank in grief, but Rama accepted it without any bitterness.

What Rama told his father was: "Father, do not grieve. Keeping your word is my duty. I do not speak twice." That is, once he had agreed to something, he would not change it. Later, when Bharata came and begged him to take the kingdom, and when sages urged him, he did not alter his decision.

As he left Ayodhya, Valmiki writes, thousands of citizens ran weeping behind his chariot. They refused to part from Rama. Because truth was always in his heart, he was in the heart of every person. Tradition says he had to set out while they slept at night.

In the forest he did not give up truthfulness either. When he returned to Ayodhya after fourteen years, the love that had waited for him was just as it had been. Bharata handed over the kingdom. In our country "Rama Rajya" is still spoken of as the emblem of a rule full of justice and truth.

Rama's life is the finest proof of the couplet, "One who lives without lying even in his mind abides in the hearts of all." He kept his speech and his thought as one. So wherever his body was, he remained in the minds of the people.
