Explanation

This couplet states the fruit of not lying in two ways: fame and virtue. "There is no fame like not lying" means that nothing brings a person fame as does the absence of falsehood. The second part says it gives all virtues without exertion. Eyyaamai means "without strain, without effort". To gain other virtues we would have to strive for each separately, but if we keep truth firmly, the others come of themselves.

How is this possible? One who does not lie cannot steal, cannot deceive, cannot pretend, and cannot carry out schemes to harm others, because all those acts proceed with the help of falsehood. Remove the lie and the root of many evils is cut. That is why truth is called the mother of virtues.

The thought about fame is also delicate. Some do good for the sake of fame. Valluvar places fame as the fruit of virtue. For the one who does not lie, fame comes unsought, because people trust him. We see in daily life how high a state trust is.

Commentators divide the couplet into two fruits of truth: fame in this life and virtue in the next. Either way, it states the full greatness of truth. We can begin simply: each day speak at least one small truth without fail, and avoid at least one small lie.

A story

How Devavrata Became Bhishma

The Adi Parva of the Mahabharata tells of Devavrata, son of King Shantanu of Hastinapura. He was the son of the Ganga, an excellent prince in valour and learning. One day Shantanu saw a fisherman's daughter, Satyavati, on the bank of the Yamuna and fell in love. Her father set a condition: the son born to his daughter must be the king.

Shantanu could not accept this and grieved. Learning the cause of his father's sorrow, Devavrata went straight to the fisher chief and pledged before him that he renounced the right to the throne entirely. The chief asked, "What if your own children claim the throne?" Devavrata then vowed to remain unmarried all his life.

The epic says his word echoed to the sky. The gods rained flowers and cried, "Bhishma! Bhishma!", which means "one of terrible vow". From then on he was called Bhishma. The delighted father granted him the boon of dying only when he wished.

Later, in the Kurukshetra war, he steadily carried out the duty he had accepted, leading the Kaurava army. Even after he fell on his bed of arrows he gave Yudhishthira teaching on dharma. His fame spread across the world. Few in ancient times were his equal in truthfulness.

Bhishma is a living example of "There is no fame like not lying". He did not alter the word he had spoken in any circumstance, and so his very name became the emblem of his truthfulness. That fame was not something he sought; it was the fruit truth gave.
