Explanation

This is a bold statement. Valluvar says that if one practises not lying without failing, then even leaving the other virtues undone is good. At first glance it may seem to reject the moral rules, but that is not its meaning. As the previous couplet says, not lying brings all virtues of itself, so there is no lack even if one does not seek them separately.

The repeated phrase poyyaamai poyyaamai deserves attention. The first poyyaamai names the virtue, truth; the second means "without failing, without slipping". The condition is that truth be practised wholly, giving falsehood no room. It is also a pleasing play of words.

Commentators see this couplet as high praise. "To show the greatness of truth he said it would be fine even to leave other virtues undone", they say. It is not permission to neglect them. The subtle point is that one who truly keeps truth cannot violate them.

It applies to modern life too. If someone follows all the rules in name but is deceitful at heart, there is no benefit. Conversely, a person who in a simple life holds firmly to honesty alone will naturally do many good deeds. Virtue, therefore, is not following a list but holding fast to a central truth.

A story

Gandhi's Letter of Confession

In his autobiography, The Story of My Experiments with Truth, Mahatma Gandhi wrote of a fault from his boyhood and its outcome. This is an Indian author recording his own life, so it is credible. He may have been about fifteen. Through the company of some bad friends he had run into a small debt. To clear it he cut a small piece off a gold armlet belonging to his brother and sold it.

It weighed on his conscience. He decided to confess to his father. But he was afraid to say it to his father's face. So he wrote his fault in a letter, asking for the punishment he deserved. His father was then ill in bed.

Gandhi handed over the note and stood nearby. His father read it slowly. Pearls of tears gathered in his eyes; he tore the note up and lay quiet for a while. He neither scolded nor punished with any word. Gandhi writes that those tears cleansed his heart and that in the silence of that love he understood his first lesson in non-violence.

Later he would say, "Truth is God". He saw all the efforts of his life as experiments in truth. Though virtue takes many forms, his life offers an example that one who clings faithfully to truth finds other virtues coming along the way.

We can join the couplet "If one practises not lying faithfully, it is good even to leave other virtues undone" with this story. The single incident of a boy writing a confession became a seed for many of his virtues, including non-violence and satyagraha.
