Explanation

This couplet divides purity into two: outer and inner. Water suffices to purify body and clothing. But the purity of the mind cannot be given by water; it is seen through truthfulness. The word kaanappadum here carries two senses: truth reveals inner purity, and by truth we can gauge purity.

Bathing is a sacred act in Indian culture. Bathing in the Ganga, the Kaveri or the sea is considered good for body and mind. Valluvar does not reject it. He makes clear that it is only for outer purity. It is a pleasing link with the earlier chapter's line about those with a stained mind who bathe and live in secret wrongdoing.

How does truth show inner purity? If a person speaks what is in his heart as it is, he has nothing to hide. A mind without concealment is like clear water. So truth becomes the mark of a pure heart. Also, the habit of lying is the dirt of the heart, and removing it is the act that bathes the inside.

In practice this can be a simple test. We can count how many times in a day we spoke concealing what was in our minds. That count is the measure of our inner purity. Reducing it steadily is a daily austerity.

A story

Ravidas and the Ganga

Tradition holds that Ravidas, a saint of the Bhakti movement, lived in Kashi as a cobbler. Even in poverty he did not leave remembrance of God and honesty. Many stories are told about him among devotees. One is given here; remember that it is a traditional tale and that versions may vary.

One day a Brahmin set out to bathe in the Ganga. On the way he gave his sandals for repair at Ravidas's stall. When he offered a coin as the wage, Ravidas said, "Sir, please offer this to Mother Ganga on my behalf." The Brahmin did so and dropped the coin into the river.

To his great astonishment, the story says, a hand rose from the Ganga, accepted the coin, and gave in return a shining gold bracelet, with a voice saying, "Give this to Ravidas." The Brahmin, seeing the bracelet, grew greedy, kept it for himself and presented it to the queen in the palace. But the queen wanted a second bracelet, so the Brahmin had to come to Ravidas again.

When the truth came out, the Brahmin recognised his fault and was ashamed. Ravidas did not grow angry; he forgave him lovingly, and tradition says that when he thought of the Ganga into his old leather water-pot, another bracelet appeared in it. From this the saying arose: "If the mind is pure, the Ganga is in the leather pot."

The story brings out the spirit of the couplet "Outer purity is accomplished by water; inner purity is seen through truthfulness." The Brahmin bathed outside but had greed and concealment inside. Ravidas was humble outside but inside had purity and truth, which showed in his plain words and acts.
