Explanation

This is among the loveliest couplets on truth. It begins "Not every lamp is a lamp" and ends "for the noble, the lamp of not lying is the lamp". A lamp removes darkness. House lamps and temple lamps remove outer darkness. But the lamp that removes inner darkness, ignorance, doubt and evil, is truthfulness, says Valluvar. For the noble this is the true light.

There is a subtlety in poyya vilakku. Poyya can also mean "that does not fail"; a lamp may go out now and then, but the lamp of truth burns without fail. Thus a single word offers a double meaning.

Why does Valluvar say "for the noble"? The noble are full of knowledge and conduct. Even without outer light they find their way by inner light. Others may rely on outer lamps, but in the end, if there is no light within, outer lamps are of no use.

In Indian culture the lamp is a symbol of knowledge. "Tamaso ma jyotir gamaya", "lead me from darkness to light", is a prayer in the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad. Valluvar says what that light is: truth. When we light a lamp each day we can ask whether the lamp of truth is burning in our minds.

There is also a philosophic point in "not every lamp is a lamp". When oil is exhausted, a lamp goes out; in a wind it flickers. But the light of truth needs neither oil nor wick; it burns by the firmness of the heart.

A story

Savitri's Truthful Words

The Vana Parva of the Mahabharata tells the story of Savitri and Satyavan. Savitri, daughter of King Ashvapati of Madra, herself chose Satyavan, son of the blind king Dyumatsena who lived in the forest. Although the sage Narada warned that Satyavan's life would end within a year, she did not change her resolve. She lived a simple forest life with him.

On the day the year ended, Satyavan collapsed and died while chopping wood. Yama drew out his life with his noose and led it away. Savitri followed Yama. Yama told her many times to turn back; she stopped him with her words. Her words were full of truth and dharma. She said, "One who has walked seven steps with the virtuous becomes a friend", and softened his heart.

Yama, pleased with Savitri's truthful words, said she could ask any boon except Satyavan's life. For the first boon she asked her father-in-law's eyesight, then his lost kingdom, then a hundred sons for her father. For the last she asked that she herself be blessed with a hundred children. Since that could not happen without Satyavan, Yama restored his life.

Savitri told no lie in any of her words. When her wisdom and courage stood in truth, even the lord of death accepted her. Her words were her light. The couplet "For the noble, the lamp of not lying is the lamp" comes true in her life. On the dark road of Yama's realm, truth guided her.
