Explanation

This couplet announces the basic principle of the chapter. Sirappeenum selvam is wealth that can give fame and elevation. Even if such great wealth could be had by causing pain to others, not doing so is the kol of the stainless, the creed of the faultless great. Kol means a principle, a firm decision. The idea is that dharma must win even where temptation is present.

Valluvar here sets a test. Some may think it is no great thing for a poor man to cause no harm. But when an opportunity arises that would bring great wealth by harming others, refusing it is true firmness. It is right that wealth gives distinction, but distinction coming through another's pain is stained.

Maasatrar are those without fault in the mind. They do not cause harm not out of fear of the law outside but out of purity of heart. It is this high state that Valluvar sets in the first couplet.

The meaning for today is plain. In business one can profit by cheating others; in politics one can rise by destroying others; in a job one can advance by seizing others' work. All these chances are "wealth that gives distinction". Those who refuse them are stainless. Their creed is a light to the world.

A story

Pari and the Jasmine Creeper

In Tamil tradition Pari is honoured as one of the seven last great patrons. He was a chieftain who ruled the Parambu hill. The Sangam poet Kapilar was his dear friend. Works such as the Purananuru sing the praises of Pari's generosity and compassion. The incidents told here are accounts current in Sangam literature and the tradition that followed it; small details may differ from work to work.

One day, as Pari rode in his chariot, tradition says he saw by the roadside a jasmine creeper swaying in the wind with no support to climb. His heart was moved. So that the creeper might climb on it, he left his own chariot standing there and walked back on foot. This act became famous as showing his compassion, which would not let even a plant suffer.

His wealth and fame were great. It is said he gave his three hundred villages to bards and poets. His prosperity roused the envy of the three crowned kings, the Chera, Chola and Pandya. They joined together and besieged the Parambu hill.

Pari had a strong fort and the love of his people. But tradition says he did not seek ways of harm to win the war, and in the end he fell by treachery. After his death Kapilar lovingly protected Pari's daughters, Angavai and Sangavai, and worked to have them married.

Pari's life is an example for "Even if wealth that gives distinction is obtained, not causing pain to others is the creed of the stainless." Though he had wealth and distinction, he did not give up his compassionate mind. His fame lives on today, while the wealth of those who brought him down is forgotten.
