Explanation

This couplet takes the form of a question and knocks on our conscience. Thannuyirkku innaamai thaan arivaan is one who himself knows how painful pain is to his own life. Why does such a one do painful things to mannuyir, the enduring living beings of the world? The word enkolo shows surprise and sorrow together.

In couplet 316 the idea of "what he himself has known" appeared; here the same idea widens to the range of all lives. Mannuyir is not only human beings but all creatures. Our tradition makes non-killing and grace common to all. Not causing pain to animals and birds is included.

There is a subtle psychological truth here. We have the power to feel our pain, and we must extend the same power to others. That is what we now call empathy. One without it knows his own pain but acts as though he does not know another's. That is not ignorance but denial.

Commentators see it as a rebuking couplet. In enkolo is our wonder: how can a person live with such a contradiction? We too can put the question to ourselves: "Knowing that it hurts me, why am I doing this?"

In the word mannuyir, mannudhal means to endure. Hidden in it is a view that living beings are enduring, having an imperishable self. In this view, harm done to any life is harm done to an enduring truth. This gives the couplet extra depth. So our understanding should take in not only our own pain but the pain of all creatures.

A story

Vallalar and the Withered Crop

Arutprakasa Vallalar, also known as Ramalinga Adigal, who lived in nineteenth-century Tamil Nadu, is honoured as the pinnacle of jeevakarunya, compassion for living beings. His songs are collected in the Tiruvarutpa. One line he wrote in them is very famous: "Vaadiya payirai kandapothellaam vaadinen", that is, "Whenever I saw a withered crop, I too withered."

This single line shows the nature of his heart. Even a plant that withered saddened him. The line tells us he felt the suffering of living beings as his own suffering. He also sang that on seeing people tormented by hunger or by terrible disease his heart shuddered at once. His compassion spread beyond humans to all living beings.

Compassion was not only song for him but became action. In 1867 he founded the Sathya Dharma Salai at Vadalur and began the charity of feeding anyone who was hungry. The hearth he lit there is said by people to burn without going out to this day. From then till now the hungry get food there.

He taught abstaining from meat, avoiding the killing of living beings, and the Samarasa Sanmarga that goes beyond differences of caste and creed. He stressed that "the human family is one" and "God is one".

Vallalar showed in his own life the meaning of the couplet, "Why does one who knows how painful pain is to his own life do painful things to other living beings?" His path was to know his own pain, understand another's pain, and strive to remove it.
