Explanation

This couplet warns that the consequence of an act returns quickly. Murpagal is the time from dawn to noon; pirpagal is after noon. Harm done within two parts of one day returns, says Valluvar's image. It tells beautifully how fast time is. Thaame varum means it will come on its own, even without our calling it.

It is a simple form of the doctrine of karma. Our tradition believes that our acts reach us. But Valluvar says it not only as philosophy but as practical experience. If we hurt someone, he dislikes us, and that dislike may return to us as trouble by other roads. Sometimes it arrives as the guilt of our own mind.

The speed of "do in forenoon, receive in afternoon" is noteworthy. Some complain that the doer of evil lives well. What Valluvar says is that the consequence comes nearer than we think and in many forms. It may not come as open punishment but as unrest of mind and loss of relations.

The practical lesson: if in the morning we hurt someone, by evening our own mind will punish us. So it is good to apologise and correct the wrong that very day. The couplet stresses quick responsibility for our acts.

A story

Shravana and Dasharatha

In the Ayodhya Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana, Dasharatha in his last days recalls an old incident. After Rama had gone to the forest he was tormented by grief of separation. Then he told Kausalya of a great wrong he had done in his youth.

When he was a prince, one rainy night he went hunting on the bank of the Sarayu. He was skilled in the art of shooting by sound alone. In the dark, thinking he heard an elephant drinking water, he loosed an arrow. It was not an elephant; it was the sound of a young man named Shravana filling water for his blind aged parents. The arrow pierced him.

Dasharatha ran and looked. Dying, Shravana said his parents were waiting thirsty and begged him to carry water to them. Dasharatha went to the blind old couple and told them what had happened. They wept and lamented. After performing the rites for their son's body the father cursed Dasharatha: "As I die of grief for my son, so you too will die suffering the separation of a son."

The curse came to pass many years later. When Rama went to the forest, Dasharatha died of the grief of separation. Valmiki writes that he wept, remembering what he had done long before. A fault he committed without knowing it reached him at the end of his life.

The story shows the truth of "If one does pain to others in the forenoon, pain will come to himself on its own in the afternoon." Here the time is not a day but many years. But the forenoon act of youth reached him in the afternoon of old age.

To reflect on

What hurt you caused long ago, perhaps without meaning to, might still deserve an apology?
