Explanation

This is the final couplet of the chapter of not doing harm. In it Valluvar concludes his argument as a piece of logic. Noyellaam noi seydhaar melavaam says that sufferings come upon the one who caused suffering. Therefore those who desire noi inmai, freedom from suffering, will not cause suffering to others.

Here Valluvar joins our self-interest with dharma. No one does not wish to live without suffering. His reasoning is that the one way to fulfil that wish is not to cause suffering to others. It is not to frighten but to make us understand clearly.

Noi here means suffering, pain, distress of every kind. Ellaam points to all kinds of suffering. Melavaam means "come upon, light upon". So this couplet widens the idea of the previous one, that what is done in the forenoon returns in the afternoon.

This chapter joins the individual and society in one lesson: others' welfare is our welfare. The harm one does to others finally affects everyone. One who acts with love lives with peace of mind and relations. So Valluvar concludes that not doing harm is not a sacrifice but a wise self-interest.

With this couplet we may recall the proverb, "you will reap what you sow". Valluvar confirms the same here in other words. One who sowed pain reaps pain; one who sowed love reaps love. So if we want a life without suffering, the way is to sow love. That is the final conclusion of this chapter.

A story

Kamsa and the Prison of Devaki

The tenth book of the Bhagavata Purana tells the story of Kamsa. Kamsa, king of Mathura, gave his sister Devaki in marriage to Vasudeva of the Shurasena line. During the wedding procession a voice from the sky said: "Kamsa, her eighth son will kill you." In fear Kamsa drew his sword to kill his sister on the spot. Vasudeva saved her by promising to hand over their children to him.

Kamsa confined them in prison. Devaki bore six children; Kamsa killed each as soon as it was born. The grief the couple bore cannot be imagined. Kamsa also imprisoned his father Ugrasena and seized the kingdom. The people of Mathura lived in fear of his cruelty.

But every evil Kamsa did turned back on him as suffering. He lived always in fear. Whether eating or sleeping, the Purana says, he thought of that eighth child who would bring him death. To protect himself he sent demons to kill the children of Gokula. All his efforts failed.

At last Krishna came to Mathura and defeated and destroyed Kamsa in his own wrestling arena. Devaki and Vasudeva, whom he had imprisoned, were freed. Ugrasena became king again.

The story makes real the couplet, "All sufferings fall upon those who caused suffering; those who desire freedom from suffering do not cause suffering to others." All the pain Kamsa gave to others finally surrounded him. He lost his peace and then his life.
