Explanation

This is the highest limit of non-killing. Even if one has to lose one's own life, one must not do the act that removes another life. Here the words thannuyir and innuyir echo each other. As sweet as my life is to me, another's life is just as sweet to it. The word innuyir, "sweet life", makes that plain.

It is a hard position. Is killing in self-defence wrong? May one kill another to save his own life? Valluvar sets the ideal state here. Commentators give several explanations. Some say this is an ideal for ascetics. Others say it is a high way common to all people. We may remember that our tradition accepts righteous war and that Valluvar does not speak of it at length here.

Seyyarka is a command. "Even in a state where one's own life goes" is the strength of the command. It is a stance that holds dharma higher than loss. The idea sounds in it that the worth of life lies not in a long span but in dharma.

In daily life we do not face situations where we lose our lives. But we are tempted to harm others for small losses to our comfort or welfare. In those small tests too we can try to hold to the firmness of this couplet. The couplet grows the habit of putting another life's welfare ahead of one's own.

A story

Bhishma Before Shikhandi

The Bhishma Parva of the Mahabharata describes the tenth day of the Kurukshetra war. As commander of the Kaurava army, Bhishma had devastated the Pandava forces for nine days. The Pandavas, not knowing how to defeat him, were troubled. On Krishna's advice they went to Bhishma himself and asked how he could be overcome. Since they were his beloved grandsons, Bhishma himself told them the way to his death.

He said: "I will not take up weapons against Shikhandi, who was born a woman and later became a man. When he stands before me, I will lay down my weapon." There was a reason for this firm stand: in his previous birth Shikhandi was the woman Amba, who held Bhishma responsible for ruining her life and did penance to take revenge. Bhishma had made a vow not to fight against the womanhood of that birth.

On the tenth day Arjuna placed Shikhandi in front and took his place in the chariot. On seeing Shikhandi, Bhishma lowered his bow. He did not attack him. Arjuna shot arrows from behind Shikhandi. Arrows pierced Bhishma's whole body. He fell from his chariot. But his body did not touch the ground; the arrows themselves held him up like a bed.

Here Bhishma was ready to lose his life to keep a vow. Even to one who stood as an enemy, he refused to take up weapons against him according to his vow. It ended in the loss of his life. Since he had the boon of dying at the time of his choice, he waited on the bed of arrows until the sun's northward course.

This incident recalls "Even if one's own life is lost, let him not do the deed that removes another's sweet life." There are many complexities of war here. Still, we can see the firmness of Bhishma, who put his principle above his life.

What would you be willing to lose in order not to cause harm, and what have you refused to give up?
