Explanation

In this verse Valluvar speaks about the relation between learning and native understanding. 'Nunniya nool pala katrinum' means even if one studies many subtle books. 'Matrum than unmai arive migum' says that after all that learning it is the person's own native understanding that prevails. For 'unmai arivu', Parimelazhagar gives the sense of understanding formed by deeds in earlier births, which is one form of fate. Some take it more simply as inborn temperament and natural ability.

This does not mean that learning is useless. Valluvar himself praises learning highly. But of two people who study the same book under the same teacher, one absorbs it easily and the other struggles. Among those in the same class one shines in science and another in music. This shows our natural leanings and abilities. Learning carves that nature, but it does not change it entirely.

The verse invites us to look from two sides. One is patience in judging our children and others: not everyone learns in the same way and at the same speed. The other is modesty about ourselves: we do not become superior merely by reading books.

In today's education marks alone are increasingly used to measure a person. This verse is a gentle reminder to that yardstick: each person holds a distinct kind of understanding, and the best education discovers and nurtures it. A teacher who watches closely can often see, in a child's play or questions, the direction in which that child's mind naturally leans. To honour that direction while still teaching the basics is the craft of good teaching, and the same is true for parents and for each of us as our own teacher.

A story

Karna's Forgetting

Karna's story in the Mahabharata subtly shows the relation between learning and fate. Karna was the son of Kunti, raised by a charioteer, the text says. He had zeal and talent for archery. But he did not get his rightful place in Drona's school. The barriers of society pressed upon him.

Wishing to learn the highest weapons, Karna decided to become a student of Parashurama. Parashurama taught only Brahmins, so Karna, the story says, presented himself as one. He stayed near him for many years and learned the loftiest arts, including the Brahmastra.

One day Parashurama slept with his head in Karna's lap. A beetle bored into Karna's thigh and made the blood flow. To avoid breaking his teacher's sleep, Karna endured the pain. When Parashurama woke and saw the blood, he judged, 'One who can bear such pain is not a Brahmin but must be a kshatriya.' Taking it as a deception, he cursed him: 'At the time you need it most, you will forget the weapon you have learned,' the text says.

On the day in the war at Kurukshetra when Karna faced Arjuna, the curse took effect. The wheel of his chariot sank into the mud. He tried to recall the weapon he had learned and could not. For all his learning, it did not help him at the moment it was needed.

Karna was not lacking in learning. What he learned were rare arts. Yet fate crossed his life. The chain of fates, the mystery of his birth, the barrier of society and the curse of his teacher, pulled him on. What we remember is his innate qualities of generosity, friendship and valour.

This is what Valluvar says: however many books one has learned, in the end fate and nature prevail.

The education he received did not wholly protect him, but his natural generosity stands undiminished by time.

To reflect on

What is your own natural leaning, the thing you learn easily and love, and are you giving it room?
