Explanation

We easily assume that doing good is simply good. Valluvar quietly says that even here care is needed. 'Nandraatral ullum thavarundu', even in doing good there is a fault, are his words. The intention to do good is fine; but if the good does not suit the nature of the receiver, it may come to nothing, or even do harm.

The phrase 'avaravar panbu arindhu', knowing the nature of each person, is the heart of the verse. Everyone has a different character, need and capacity. Giving food to a hungry person is good. But always giving only free food to someone who could work may reduce his self-respect and capacity to labour. Giving a patient a medicine that does not suit his body will not cure him. The form of kindness must change with the need of the receiver.

Moreover, a good gift placed in the hands of the wicked may be used for evil. That is why one must know a person's nature before giving freely. This is not a licence for miserliness; it is advice for kindness joined with wisdom.

It applies to what parents do for their children as well. To give everything without limit, and to support every wrong, may damage the child's growth. Real goodness is to show love with knowledge of the child's nature.

The verse asks the giver to look as carefully at the receiver as at his own generosity, because goodwill that does not see clearly may end up like a blunt blade: well-meant, but ill-aimed.

A story

The Boon to Bhasmasura

From the Puranas (Bhagavata and Shiva traditions): Lord Shiva at Kailasa is an embodiment of compassion who readily grants his grace to devotees. Devotees praise him as one of a loving heart who grants boons to those who approach him, without examining who they are or what they intend. The asura Bhasmasura, knowing this compassion, performed severe penance.

His penance lasted many years. Pleased with his determination, Shiva appeared before him and asked, "What boon do you wish?" Bhasmasura asked, "Let whoever I place my hand upon be burnt to ashes." Without examining his nature, out of his compassion, Shiva granted the boon.

The moment he received the boon, Bhasmasura resolved to test it. He tried to place his hand on the head of Shiva himself, who had given it. Shiva fled from him. Seeing him run, Bhasmasura pursued.

Shiva appealed to Vishnu. Vishnu took the form of Mohini, a beautiful woman, and appeared before Bhasmasura. Mohini spoke to him of dance and invited him to dance with her. Bhasmasura imitated every movement Mohini made. At one moment Mohini placed her hand on her head. Bhasmasura did the same, and by the power of the boon he himself was burnt to ashes.

This story shows the limitless compassion of Shiva, and at the same time carries a lesson on using that compassion with wisdom. It makes plain how dangerous a gift can become when it is given without knowing the nature of the one who receives it.
