Explanation

This verse defines who the true kin are. When a man has wealth, everyone stands around him. But even when wealth is gone and there is no support, those who do not forget old relationship and cherish it with love are the kin, says Valluvar.

'Patrutra kannum' is a time when everything useful about a man has gone: the leader has lost office, wealth and authority. At that time many leave; we have a saying that, like birds that sought shade in the sun leave the tree in the rain, they go. But kinsmen do not go like that.

'Pazhaimai paaraattudhal' is honouring the memory of a long relationship. It is the feeling of gratitude: 'He always helped me; may I abandon him now?' Among kin this feeling is natural. They are not those who came seeking benefit; they came by the bond.

Two lessons follow for a leader. First, who the true kin are can be known in a crisis. So even in good times one should identify and honour genuine relations. Second, he too must stand by others without abandoning them in their time of sorrow.

This applies to friendship too. Friends who came for wealth vanish in poverty. But a true relationship continues in poverty. This Valluvar says emphatically as 'sutrathaar kanne ula'.

Thus the worth of kin rises. They are a greater protection than wealth, for wealth may go but true kinship does not.

One who understands this will value his kin not by money or office but by love. That is lasting wealth.

A story

Lakshmana's Exile with Rama

From the Valmiki Ramayana (Ayodhya Kanda): All Ayodhya was rejoicing over Rama's coronation. But because of Kaikeyi's boons, it turned into exile for Rama and the crown for Bharata. Rama gave up the kingdom. Leaving wealth, palace, army and fame, he had to go to the forest for fourteen years.

When Rama left for the forest, many in Ayodhya grieved for him. But who could be of use to a Rama who had lost everything? He was no longer king; going with him meant only hardship. At such a time Lakshmana came forward. "I shall come with you," he said. Rama refused: "Stay here as support to our mother and father."

Lakshmana insisted, "A palace without you is a forest to me; a forest with you is a palace." Leaving his comforts and his wife Urmila, he went as guard and servant to Rama and Sita. His love, which stood by the brother who had lost everything, was unshaken.

During all fourteen years Lakshmana kept awake day and night to protect his brother and sister-in-law. He built the hut, found food, fought rakshasas. His love never lessened a single day. Even when Rama sank in grief on losing Sita, it was Lakshmana who comforted and consoled him.

To Rama without royal wealth, Lakshmana was the great wealth. Lakshmana, who cherished the old bond after position and property had gone, is the model of true kin.

When Rama returned to Ayodhya after conquering Ravana, he always remembered Lakshmana as one of the principal reasons for his victory.

To reflect on

When someone close to you lost everything, were you the one who stayed, or are you grateful for the one who stayed for you?
