Explanation

This verse states the basic truth of the chapter in two lines. The first: effort creates wealth. The second: lack of effort ushers in poverty. 'Thiruvinai' is 'thiru', wealth, and 'vinai', the action that produces it. The word 'pukuththi vidum' is very fine. Poverty does not come of itself; the sense is that lack of effort leads it by the hand into our house.

A clarity is needed here. Wealth is not money alone. Learning, friendship, good name and health are also wealth. All of them grow by effort. One who does not tend them loses them and falls into an inner poverty. So 'inmai' may mean both material poverty and a lack of inner richness.

Some commentators read this verse together with the next. The next verse uses the goddess of prosperity and her elder sister as a figure; this verse states its philosophy directly. Valluvar simply establishes that effort and wealth have a link of cause and effect.

In daily life the same law continues. The one who saves a little each day grows prosperous in time. The one who learns a little each day becomes wise. The one who walks a little each day gains health. The sum of small efforts blooms as prosperity. Conversely, small postponements gather and thicken into want. So the verse reminds us that today's small effort is the seed of tomorrow's wealth.

A story

The Pandavas Who Made Khandavaprastha into Indraprastha

The Adi Parva of the Mahabharata tells this event. When a dispute of rights arose between the Pandavas and Kauravas in Dhritarashtra's court, elders such as Bhishma and Drona intervened and divided the kingdom. The Kauravas received Hastinapura. The Pandavas were given Khandavaprastha, a forest and wasteland. The story describes it as a dense wood where nagas and animals dwelt.

Seeing that wasteland, no one would have thought a city could arise there. But Yudhishthira and the other four did not lose heart. Krishna stayed with them and guided. They cleared and levelled the forest. The artisan Maya planned and built the city for them. With forts, moats, palaces and gardens a beautiful city came up. They named it Indraprastha.

Not only the city but wealth grew. The Pandavas sent his brothers to the four directions, subdued kings and collected tribute. Yudhishthira performed the Rajasuya sacrifice. Many kings of the world came to it and offered gifts. All this wealth was the outcome of their continued effort.

There is a point worth noticing. On receiving the wasteland they did not sit lamenting it as injustice. They laboured on the land they got. Devotees consider that this labour itself led Maya's help and Krishna's company to them.

The Mahabharata also says that later this same wealth became the cause of Duryodhana's jealousy and brought trouble. Mentioning it completes the tale. Still the lesson for this verse is clear: by effort a forest becomes a city; by lack of effort even a city becomes a forest.
