Manly Effort

This chapter teaches that ceaseless effort brings greatness and prosperity, and that failure is no shame, while refusing to try is.

Introduction

The name of this chapter in the Arasiyal section of the Porutpaal is Aalvinai Udaimai. 'Aalvinai' is effort joined with manly resolve, the quality of taking up a task and carrying it to the end, and 'udaimai' is the possession of that quality. The previous chapter asked us to put sloth away; this chapter puts effort in its place. The two are the two faces of one coin.

The first verse is the life of the chapter: 'Arumai udaiththendru asaavaamai ventum'. One should not be dismayed saying that a task is hard, because effort itself brings greatness. The second verse says not to abandon a task half way. The third and fourth point out that generosity without effort fails, like a sword in a coward's hand. The fifth praises the man who loves work as the pillar that bears the sorrow of his kin.

Verses six to eight speak of the bond between effort and the goddess of prosperity, and between sloth and her sister Mudevi, the goddess of misfortune. The finer idea of the eighth verse is that to lack means is no blame to anyone, but to fail to try, knowing what one ought to do, is blame. The last two verses say that even if the divine and fate oppose, effort pays its wage, and those who strive without slackening will see the far side of fate itself.

Another distinction of this chapter is that it ties effort to social responsibility. From the third verse to the fifth, Valluvar shows that labour is not for oneself alone; it is the basis of help, of giving and of bearing one's kin. One who does not work can neither give nor bear. So each person's effort becomes shade for many around him. When one member of a family works without slackening, it gives hope to all; when a few in a village serve continually, it changes the face of the village. The chapter also touches the great question of fate, on which commentators differ in reconciling it with the earlier chapter on destiny.

In today's world the meaning of effort has not changed. Behind each small victory, in an examination, a trade, an art or a household, there is continued practice. But Valluvar does not tie effort only to success. He does not blame the one who tried and lost; he blames the one who did not try. So this chapter comforts those frozen by fear of failure and warns those who have already succeeded.

Chapter story

Appar and His Uzhavaram

The Tirunavukkarasar Puranam in the Periya Puranam beautifully shows the dignity of labour. Born in a Vellala family at Thiruvamur, Marulneekkiyar in his youth joined the Jain faith and became known as Dharmasena. His elder sister Tilakavathiyar remained steadfast in devotion to Shiva. When Dharmasena was tormented by a terrible stomach pain, the medicines of the Jains did not help. He came to Tilakavathiyar, who gave him sacred ash and led him to the Veerattaneswarar temple at Thiruvathigai. There he sang the decad beginning 'Kootraayinavaaru vilakkakileer', and the pain left him. The Purana says the Lord called him 'Navukkarasu', king of speech.

After that he turned his life into unbroken service. In his hand he carried the uzhavaram, a small tool for cutting grass. In every town he visited he cleared with his own hands the grass and thorn-bushes that had grown in the corridors of Shiva temples. The distance he walked was great; on foot he went to Thiruvaiyaru, Thirupazhanam, Thirukkadavur, Tiruvarur, Thirumaraikadu and many other shrines. Even in old age he did not leave the uzhavaram service.

Trials came too. The Purana says the Pallava king Mahendravarman tortured him for leaving Jainism for Shaivism. They threw him in a lime kiln, fed him poisoned milk, set an elephant on him and bound him to a stone and cast him in the sea. Each time he relied on the Lord's name. When thrown into the sea he sang 'Sotruṇai Vedhiyan', and devotees believe the stone floated like a raft and set him ashore.

He did not fear failure and he did not give up service. Even in old age, tottering, he went from temple to temple singing and bowing. Tradition says he lived eighty-one years. His decads in the Thevaram still ring in Tamil temples.

There is another scene from Appar's life. While he stayed at Thirupoonthuruthi, he heard that Thirugnanasambandar was coming to that town. Though older in years, the Purana says he himself bore Sambandar's palanquin on his shoulder. Such humility and labour done without regard for his own greatness is the mark of his service.

His uzhavaram work was no mere ritual. He held that keeping the temple precincts clean was direct worship offered to the Lord. Even today in many temples devotees gather in the name of uzhavaram service and clean the premises. So his service did not remain one man's labour; it has endured across generations as a culture.

This life is a living witness to the first verse, 'Arumai udaiththendru asaavaamai ventum'. Unceasing service crossed great obstacles: illness, the rejection of his former community and a king's cruelty. 'Muyarchi thiruvinai aakkum': his service proves it. A small tool, the uzhavaram, made him an unforgettable saint of the Tamil world.
