Explanation

'Vinaikkurai' means leaving a started task not fully finished. Valluvar gives two cautions. First, while the work goes on, guard it against spoiling. Second, the world forsakes the one who leaves work incomplete. A person who does half-work is not trusted, in word or in relationship.

For the line 'theerndhaarin theerndhandru ulagu', commentators give several senses. Some say, 'the world abandons those who abandon the work.' Others say, 'the world's friendship is exhausted for the one who does not complete.' Whichever sense is taken, the worth of unfinished effort is plain.

If a temple tower stops half-built, it has neither beauty nor use. Likewise, once a work is begun its responsibility comes to us. We must guard and finish it. To begin is easy; to finish is valour.

'Ompal' means to guard; the subtlety is that a task must be guarded like a child. Obstacles will come to a begun task; fatigue will come; new attractions will come. Guarding the task against these is the real test of effort. Today many celebrate a fresh beginning; fewer honour the finish. Valluvar gives his respect to the finish.

In today's life, how many plans stand half done, practices abandoned, studies unfinished. Each remains a weight at the corner of the mind. One should think before taking up a task, and once taken, finish it. That is the verse's counsel.

A story

Hanuman Who Did Not Rest on Mainaka

This is from the beginning of the Sundara Kanda. As Rama's envoy, Hanuman resolved to leap across the southern sea, a hundred yojanas wide, in search of Sita. As he rose from the peak of Mahendra, Valmiki's Ramayana depicts trees uprooted by his speed flying behind him.

In the sea stood a golden mountain named Mainaka. At the sea-god's word it wished to give Hanuman rest and rose from the water. 'Sir, rest a while here; eat the fruits and roots on me,' it invited lovingly. The invitation held love, and comfort too. But Hanuman respectfully touched and honoured it. 'Friend, thank you for your love. Until Rama's work is done I have no rest. I cannot waste time,' he said, and flew on.

On the way, Surasa, mother of the nagas, opened her mouth to stop him; he slipped away from her by his wit. When the demoness Simhika caught his shadow and pulled him, he slew her and went forward. At every obstacle he did not forget that his task came first.

Reaching Lanka he searched for Sita and found her in the Ashoka grove. He gave her Rama's ring and comforted her. He then carried the news back to Rama. The task he had begun he completed to the end, fully, not leaving it half done.

This tale is a model for 'vinaikkan vinaiketal ompal'. The one who does not forget his work even when pleasant invitations come is the one who finishes it. Hanuman honoured Mainaka's love yet did not stay; his firmness is a lesson for all.
