Explanation

'Inbam vizhaiyaan' does not mean pleasure must not be. The sense is one who does not seek his own comfort first. He loves work, that is, he does not shrink from bearing responsibility. When trouble comes to his kin, such a man runs first to help.

In the phrase 'thunbam thudaiththu oondrum thoon' there are two acts. First, wiping: removing sorrow as one wipes tears. Second, propping: holding up as a pillar holds a sagging roof. A pillar hides itself and bears the weight of the house. In the same way the one who takes on responsibility bears it quietly.

This verse praises the place of the worker in a family. One who lives not for himself but works for others gives up the ordinary hours of the day. Even when no glory comes to him, everyone knows his place.

In the verse the word 'kelir' means both relatives and friends. The simile of the pillar is very apt. A pillar stands firm in its place, bears the weight without moving, and does not shout about its work. So the one who shoulders responsibility does not seek fame; he stands where need arises. Some commentators explain 'inbam vizhaiyaan' as one who does not seek petty pleasure. Even so the idea does not change.

In families and offices today there are pillars who quietly bear weight. To thank them, and to try to be a pillar for someone ourselves, is the verse's call.

A story

Bhima Who Bore the Burden at Ekachakra

The Adi Parva of the Mahabharata tells this incident. After escaping from the house of lac, the Pandavas lived in hiding with their mother Kunti at the town of Ekachakra, in a brahmin's house. The alms they brought, Kunti divided into two, and one half Bhima ate. His bodily strength and hunger were known to all.

In that town a demon named Baka was terrorising the people. By the town's agreement a cartload of food, two bulls and a man had to be sent to him each week. That day the turn of the brahmin's family came. The brahmin, his wife, son and daughter each offered themselves saying 'I shall go,' and wept.

Hearing their grief, Kunti wished to help. 'One of my five sons will go for you,' she said. Yudhishthira and the others hesitated, but Kunti chose Bhima. Bhima gladly accepted his mother's word.

Bhima drove the food-cart. In the midst of the forest he faced Baka. On the way he himself ate the food. Baka attacked in rage. The two fought a fierce wrestling match. At last Bhima killed Baka and dropped his body at the town's fort gate. The townspeople were relieved.

After this incident the story goes that the people of Ekachakra quietly sheltered the Pandavas. Without knowing who they were, they were grateful to them. The reward of one who stands as a pillar is the quiet gratitude and trust of others.

Here Bhima did not seek his pleasure; he wiped away the sorrow not only of his kin but of the brahmin family who had given them shelter. This is the model for 'inbam vizhaiyaan vinaivizhaivaan'. He was the one who bore the burden as a pillar.
