Aaruvathu sinam

Meaning

Anger is a thing to be cooled.

Word by word

that which should cool down
anger

Explanation

Anger is like fire. It is natural for it to rise, but wisdom lies in letting it cool. Avvaiyar does not say anger will never come; she says anger is something that must be cooled.

Anger that is not cooled burns us first, and then burns our relationships and our work. One who cools his anger has conquered himself.

Valmiki Ramayana, Bala Kanda

How Vishvamitra Became a Brahmarshi

From the Valmiki Ramayana, Bala Kanda. When he was still a king, Vishvamitra tried to seize Vasishtha's wish-granting cow by force and failed. In his anger he performed fierce penance, won many divine weapons and attacked Vasishtha. Vasishtha calmly stopped them all with his staff.

For many years Vishvamitra did penance, but each time anger or desire rose in him, the fruit of his austerity was lost. At last he vowed, "I will not give way to anger again, nor even speak," and continued his tapas.

Only when his anger had fully cooled did the gods hail him as a Brahmarshi, and Vasishtha himself called him by that name. What weapons could not win, cooled anger won.
