Meaning

Uma, and the Lord who has Uma as half of Himself, came here in a single form and made even us love them. From now on there are no other paths to consider; there is no other mother to give birth to me again; and the desire I once had for women with shoulders like bamboo is enough, it is over.

Explanation

The half-man, half-woman form of Shiva and Shakti is the heart of the verse: Shiva and Shakti in one body. That vision brings Bhattar to three conclusions. No need to search other paths; no more rebirth, so no other mother; and the old desires are now enough.

'There is no other mother to bear me' is a beautiful phrase. He says he will not be born again in a gentle way: 'I need no other mother now; you are my mother.'

Skanda Purana, Arunachala Mahatmya

The Sage Bhringi and Ardhanarishvara

A story told in the Arunachala Mahatmya and in Tamil temple traditions. The sage Bhringi worshipped only Shiva, never the Mother. When circling Shiva and Parvati at Kailasa, he tried to go around Shiva alone, leaving her out.

When Shiva and Parvati sat close together, Bhringi turned into a bee, slipped between them and circled Shiva alone. Because he ignored Shakti, the strength drained from his body until he could not stand. Shiva gave him a third leg to lean on.

The Mother performed penance to be joined to Shiva so that they could never be separated. As its fruit, Shiva took her as the left half of His body and became Ardhanarishvara. After that Bhringi could not circle one without the other. He understood, and worshipped the Mother too. This is the 'single form' Bhattar sings of.

To reflect on

In your life, do strength and gentleness live together, or do you value only one?
