Anrae thatuththu ennai aantukontaay, kontathu alla enkai / Nanrae unakku? ini naan en seyinum natukkatalul / Senrae vizhinum, karaiyaetrukai nin thiruvulamoa! / Onrae, pala uruvae, aruvae, en umaiyavalae.

Meaning

Long ago you stopped me and made me yours. Would it become you now to deny that you took me? Whatever I do from now on, even if I go and fall into the middle of the sea, is it not your will to bring me safe to shore? O my Uma, who are one, who are many forms, and who are formless!

Explanation

This is a child's claim of right: 'You accepted me; you cannot now say no.' Bhattar does not trust his own worth; he trusts the Mother's word. Even if I go wrong, even if I fall into the sea, bringing me to shore is your responsibility.

The last line names three ways the Mother exists: the One Supreme, the many forms of the gods, and the formless open space. She who is all of these is 'my Uma'.

Periya Puranam, the life of Thirunavukkarasar (Appar)

Appar Floats on the Sea Tied to a Stone

From Sekkizhar's Periya Puranam. Because Thirunavukkarasar had left the Jain faith and returned to Shiva, the Pallava king tormented him in many ways. At last the king ordered him tied to a great stone and thrown into the middle of the sea.

Thrown into the sea, Appar was not afraid. He sang the Lord's name in a hymn that ends 'our true companion is Namasivaya'. At that moment the stone he was tied to floated like a raft.

The waves carried him to the shore at Thiruppadiripuliyur. The trust Bhattar sings of, 'even if I fall into the middle of the sea, bringing me to shore is your will', happened in Appar's life just as the words say.

To reflect on

When you felt you would go under, what brought you to shore?
