Devi Bhagavata Purana, Book 3Satyavrata and the One Sacred Syllable
From the Devi Bhagavata Purana. Utathya, a brahmin boy, was slow at his studies. Mocked by everyone, he went to the forest and lived by a single vow: never to tell a lie. So he came to be called Satyavrata, 'he who is vowed to truth'.
One day a boar wounded by an arrow ran and hid near his hut. Moved by its pain, he cried out 'Ai! Ai!' The hunter who followed asked where the boar had gone. Satyavrata could not lie, nor could he betray the animal with the truth. But the sound he had cried without knowing was 'Aim', the seed syllable of the Goddess of learning, and the Mother's grace flowed into him.
His understanding blossomed, and he answered, 'The eye that saw cannot speak, and the tongue that speaks did not see,' saving both the boar and his vow. He later became a great sage. It shows that the Mother gives great fruit even for a small good act done without knowing.
