Explanation

'A fruit ripened of itself' is a lovely image: a fruit that ripened and fell into one's hand with no one picking or searching for it. That is how the Mother's grace came to Bhattar, not by his effort but by her kindness.

The verse makes one request: 'that I die here and am not born again', release from the cycle of being born again and again. The churning stick of verse 7 becomes a direct prayer here: 'Come yourself and take me.'

Periya Puranam, the life of Karaikkal Ammaiyar

Karaikkal Ammaiyar Asks Never to Be Born Again

From Sekkizhar's Periya Puranam. In Karaikkal there lived a woman named Punithavathi. Of two mangoes her husband sent home, she gave one to a hungry devotee of Shiva. When her husband asked for the second mango, she prayed, and a mango appeared in her hand.

Frightened by this, her husband left her. Punithavathi prayed to the Lord, 'I no longer need this beauty,' and was given the form of a ghostly devotee. She walked to Kailasa on her hands, and Shiva himself greeted her as 'Ammai', Mother.

When the Lord asked what boon she wanted, she said: 'Give me a love that never dies. Give me freedom from birth. And if I am born again, let me never forget You.' Bhattar's request in this verse is the same freedom from birth.
