Mahabharata, Vana Parva (Pativrata Mahatmya)Savitri Follows Yama
From the Mahabharata. Princess Savitri married Satyavan knowing that he would die within a year. When the day came, Satyavan, cutting wood in the forest, laid his head in her lap. Yama, lord of death, came and took his life.
Savitri followed Yama. He told her to turn back; she kept following, speaking of dharma. Pleased by her wisdom, Yama said, 'Ask for anything except Satyavan's life.' She asked for her father-in-law's sight and kingdom, and then said, 'Let me have a hundred children.' When Yama granted it, she asked, 'How can that be without my husband?' Smiling, Yama gave Satyavan's life back.
Savitri stood firm without fear even when Death came. What Bhattar asks for, to be without fear at that hour, is the vision of the Mother and the Father standing before him.
