Meaning

O fragrant Shyamala, green parrot, whose words are sweet as music! Those who once did countless penances for your cool grace, do they gain only the wealth that the earth gives? Do they not also gain the wealth of the wise gods' heaven, and the house of liberation that never perishes?

Explanation

People usually ask God for the wealth of this world. Bhattar says that for those who truly seek her it does not stop there. The wealth of earth, the wealth of heaven and the liberation that never ends: all three are given.

The closing call, 'fragrant Shyamala, green parrot, whose words are music', is tender. Shyamala is the goddess of music, and she holds a parrot. Having said something large, Bhattar ends by speaking sweetly to the Mother.

Devi Mahatmya (Markandeya Purana), chapters 1 and 13

King Suratha and the Merchant Samadhi

From the Devi Mahatmya. King Suratha lost his kingdom to enemies and fled to the forest. In the same forest was a merchant named Samadhi, whose own family had driven him out of his home for his wealth. Both grieved over what they had lost.

They went to the sage Medhas and asked, 'We have lost everything. Why are we still attached to it?' The sage told them of the Goddess, who is both the illusion that binds and the power that frees. The two worshipped her on a riverbank for three years.

When the Goddess appeared, Suratha asked for his kingdom back, and was also granted that he would be born as a Manu in his next life. Samadhi asked for the wisdom that cuts attachment, and received it. The story shows that the wealth of earth, high station in the heavens and liberation all come from the Mother.

To reflect on

If you could ask God for one thing today, would it be something of this world, or peace of mind?
