Meaning

O parrot! O light that dwells and shines in the hearts of your devotees! O source of every light that shines! O open space where nothing can be counted!

Explanation

The verse moves from small to vast: a parrot, a light in the heart, the source of all light, boundless space, and the five elements that unfolded from it. Step by step it shows that the Mother fills everything.

Then, in the last line, great wonder: one so vast fits inside my small understanding! No one can scoop the ocean into a small pot, yet out of love the ocean itself comes and settles in the pot. The verse ends with the word 'wonder', and the next verse begins with the same word.

Devi Bhagavata Purana, the Devi Gita (Book 7)

The Goddess Shows Her Cosmic Form to Himavan

From the Devi Gita of the Devi Bhagavata Purana. Tormented by the demon Taraka, the gods prayed to the Mother. She appeared before them as pure light and promised to be born as the daughter of Himavan. The mountain king bowed and asked, 'Mother, tell me your true nature.'

The Mother said, 'Before creation, I alone existed. Space, air, fire, water and earth all unfolded from me.' Then she showed her cosmic form. In it the sky was her head, the sun and moon her eyes, and all the worlds her body. The gods trembled at the sight.

When they pleaded, the Mother returned to her sweet and gentle form. The boundless one, out of love, comes and stands in a small form. That is what Bhattar marvels at when he says 'What a wonder!'

To reflect on

Tonight, can you look at the sky and feel both its vastness and the quiet within you?
