Sthala Purana of Kanchipuram (Ekambaranathar)Kamakshi and the Sand Lingam
From the sthala purana of Kanchipuram. Once at Kailasa, Parvati playfully covered Shiva's eyes, and in that moment the whole world sank into darkness. As atonement, Shiva told her to go down to earth and perform penance.
At Kanchi the Mother made a lingam of sand beneath a mango tree and worshipped it. To test her love, Shiva sent a great flood down the Kampa river. Afraid that the lingam would dissolve, she held it tightly in her arms. Then Shiva appeared and married her. That lingam is Ekambaranathar.
The Mother of the heavens came down to earth, worshipped like a devotee, and settled at Kanchi as Kamakshi. 'Easy for those who meet you on earth' speaks of the grace of a Mother who came this close.
