Meaning

Her form is a wonder; she is Sundaravalli, whose victorious face all lotuses praise in defeat. Long ago Shiva looked at Kama, husband of Rati, with His third eye, and turned Kama's triumph into defeat. Did she not then win over that same Shiva's heart and take the left half of His body for her own?

Explanation

The verse plays on the word 'sayam', victory: a victorious face, victory, defeat, the mind's victory. Kama came to conquer Shiva, and his victory became defeat. But the Mother did what Kama could not: she won Shiva's heart.

The difference is this. Kama came with desire and arrows; the Mother came with penance and love. So Shiva gave her half of His own body. Where desire cannot win, love does.

Shiva Purana, Rudra Samhita

The Burning of Kama

From the Shiva Purana. Only a son born to Shiva and Parvati could defeat the demon Taraka, but Shiva was lost in deep meditation. The gods sent Kama, god of love, to stir love for Parvati in Shiva's heart.

Kama came with the spring. Just as Parvati was offering flowers to Shiva, he shot a flower arrow from his sugarcane bow. Shiva's meditation broke. He opened His third eye, and in its fire Kama was burned to ash. Rati wept aloud.

Parvati understood that she could not win Shiva by beauty, and she undertook a fierce penance. That penance won Shiva. What Kama's arrow could not do, her love did. The Purana adds that, moved by Rati's prayer, Kama was given life again, though without a body.

To reflect on

Is there something you want to win that you could approach with patience and love instead of craving?
