Explanation

The whole verse is questions. Each question names one of the Mother's dwelling places: Shiva's left half, the Vedas, the moon, the lotus, the ocean. Tradition names all of these as places where she dwells.

And among them, almost unnoticed, is the question 'my heart?' If the Vedas, the moon and the ocean are her home, so is my small heart. The wonder of verse 16, that the boundless one fits within my understanding, here becomes a quiet certainty.

Brahmanda Purana, Lalitopakhyana

Sripura in the Ocean of Nectar

From the Lalitopakhyana. After the defeat of Bhandasura, the gods wished to build a city for the Mother Lalita. The divine architects Vishvakarma and Maya built Sripura on the summit of Mount Meru, in the middle of the ocean of nectar.

Twenty-five walls surround the city, each made of a different metal or jewel. Passing through them one reaches the Chintamani palace, and at its centre, at the central point of the Sri Chakra, the Mother Lalita sits on the lap of Kameshvara.

The Purana places her on a mountain, in the middle of the ocean, beside Shiva. To that list Bhattar adds 'my heart', for the Sri Vidya tradition teaches that the true Sripura is the devotee's own heart.

To reflect on

If the divine dwells in your heart, how will you keep that place clean today?
