Periya Puranam, the life of Kannappa NayanarKannappa Who Gave His Own Eyes
From Sekkizhar's Periya Puranam. Thinnan, a young hunter, found a Shiva lingam on the hill of Kalahasti. The moment he saw it his whole heart went to the Lord. He knew no rules of worship. He brought water in his mouth to bathe the lingam, carried flowers in his hair to adorn it, and offered meat that he had tasted first.
On the sixth day, blood flowed from one eye of the lingam. Without hesitating, Thinnan dug out his own eye with an arrow and placed it there, and the bleeding stopped. Then blood flowed from the other eye. He placed his foot there to mark the spot and began to dig out his second eye.
Then the Lord said three times, 'Stop, Kannappa!' and held his hand. That one-pointed love, with no other thought at all, is the devotion Bhattar vows in this verse. That is why he calls the Mother 'the apple of my eye'.
